Here's the thing... I got a new job about 6 weeks ago and am now working five days a week again. It's crazy weird because I'd gotten so used to working four 10 hour days and having my extra day a week off. While it kinda sucks that I don't have my "Mommy Day" anymore I really love the shorter shifts and getting to spend more time with my family on a daily basis.
Since starting me new job I haven't been able to keep this blog up. I'm still doing a lot of the different things I would post about on here but I just haven't had the time to really, REALLY put my posts together. And being that I don't have my homemaker day anymore I think it's time to sign off. If you still want to catch up on what I'm doing and stuff I guess you'll have to check out my other blog. I plan to post my different projects and stuff on there eventually.
This is the Thursday Homemaker... Okay...so it's not the first one I started but it IS the first one I've completed. I made it in very unisex colors -- pale yellow, light gray, and green -- since the baby it's for doesn't want to cooperate.

<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_f2ZjVZ3VRD0/S5lq5gfODSI/AAAAAAAAATo/uKqgWQ0oSK8/s1600-h/DSCI0445.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; My skeins of yellow and green were fairly small. (I'm not sure exactly how big they were. They were just soft and perfect of a baby blanket.) The yellow on each end is one full skein per end and the green portion in the center is two skeins.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; (I made a number of gifts but this may just be the only one I end up sharing. I was just too busy with the holidays to update or post much of anything.) These were Simon's gift to everyone this year and I may just make it an annual gift in the future.
I bought some plain glass balls and a bunch of ribbon when we were out shopping the day after Thanksgiving back in November. The balls are really cool because you can take the top off them and put just about anything small enough to fit through the hole inside for decorations. I just took some of the Christmas photos I had taken and edited of Simon and put them on the inside. (Getting them in and looking good took some doing but once I figured out how to roll and unroll them effectively it got easier.) Then I added some kind of festive bow around the top with some ribbon. Really easy and the effect is pretty cool.
We didn't put up a Christmas tree or I would have put them on the tree to take pics...But here they are:
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; I know. I'm a day late posting but I ended up working yesterday -- holiday pay, baby! -- and getting today off. So this week, the Thursday Homemaker is coming to you on Friday. Anyway, our cafeteria operates on limited hours on holidays so those of us that work usually coordinate a potluck of some kind. We appropriately had a ton of food and today I share my contribution.
I discovered peppermint bark this year and am completely addicted. I've been buying the Dove dark chocolate version of it and decided that it can't be that difficult to make. I started by looking it up on my favorite cooking website and then just chose the simplest version of it to try. (And believe me...it was good but I will be experimenting with it!) The recipes is as follows...

2 packages of semisweet chocolate chips
Candy canes (I bought "soft" peppermint sticks at Walmart.)

Put 4-5 candy canes (5-6 peppermint sticks) in a zip-top bag and crush the hell out of them. I have cheap bags so I ended up with holes in them which works well in a little while.
Using a double boiler melt the chocolate chips over medium heat. (Be careful not to get any moisture in your chocolate or it will seize up and be useless.) While it's melting line a cookie sheet with wax paper. Once your chocolate is melted, take your bag of crushed candy and shake out the tiny particles of "peppermint dust." If you mix it into the chocolate it kind of infuses the minty goodness throughout the whole candy.
Spread chocolate on the wax papers -- two bags takes up most of the sheet. You don't want it too thin.
Sprinkle the rest of your peppermint chunks across the the top. I kind of lightly patted the peppermint chips down into the chocolate so that when it firmed up they stuck better.
Place the whole tray in the refrigerator or freezer until the chocolate is solid again -- about an hour in the fridge.
Break into pieces.
Enjoy.

Most of the bark was gone before I left work. The rest was inhaled by my family rather quickly.

What's for Dinner?

TACO SOUP!! All I've really been able to work on recently is Christmas presents. Being that I don't want to post pictures of them yet -- lest some unsuspecting family member come across my blog and spoil their Christmas surprise! -- all I can really come up with for today's blog is my dinner recipe.
I discovered taco soup on allrecipes about 4 years ago and fell in love with it. It's easy and so, so good. Tony actually calls it one of my specialties. I've altered the recipes and don't actually follow one anymore but here are the basics...

Taco Soup
1 lb ground turkey
1 can diced tomatos -- I use the ones with green chiles
1 can kidney beans
1 can black beans
1 can corn
1 "can" of water
onion -- I use 1/2 of one cuz my husband doesn't like much onion
1 package taco seasoning
cilantro
salt/pepper/garlic to taste

Brown the ground turkey (you can also use beef if you prefer)
Dump tomatos, rinsed beans, drained corn, and diced onion into a crock pot. Fill one of your cans with water and add it. Stir in the package of seasoning. Once your meat is cooked at it too. Allow to heat for a few hours for the flavors to mingle.

Add your chopped cilantro and salt/pepper/garlic to taste.

Serve with cheese, salsa, sour cream, chips...or just eat it as is. I saved the little cardboard sleeve from my weekly Starbucks fix so I could get it the right length. Here's my pattern...

Needles: US size 9
Yarn: 2 colors, "medium, worsted" yarn (I don't know how much it actually takes...but it isn't too much.)
Stitches: Knit and Purl

Cast on 12 stitches using both colors together.

Row 1: Knit
Row 2: Purl

Repeat until it's the desired length. This is where my saved cardboard sleeve came in handy. I could measure what I'd knitted up against the sleeve and see how long it was. Cast off when it's barely smaller than the sleeve. Leave at least one of the strands of yard nice and long.

Using a tapestry needle, sew the two ends together with your long strand of yarn.

Enjoy your coffee and decrease your carbon footprint! :) It's also a great way to use up the little bits of yarn in your stash.

My First "Ikea Hack"

My husband came across the bog Ikea Hacker and found a lot of really interesting things. It got us thinking of things that we could "hack." I was inspired for the candle I "hacked" below by something I saw on the site. Here's how I did it...
This is what you need...
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_f2ZjVZ3VRD0/Ste5O4_EueI/AAAAAAAAAOo/c3jsyRaplVc/s1600-h/087.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; All are found in the "home decor" section.

I decided that I wanted my candle "layered" with different shades of the same color. But you could totally do it all one color. That's what Tony thought I was going to do. Anyway...

<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_f2ZjVZ3VRD0/Ste51xFKDlI/AAAAAAAAAO4/mP124VxHHLk/s1600-h/088.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; I saved the shavings to be one of the layers of my candle. A cheap steak knife worked great for all my shaving and cutting.

<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_f2ZjVZ3VRD0/Ste6nWUOiHI/AAAAAAAAAPA/X97yS5Rqc7s/s1600-h/091.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; I used 4 of them for each layer. After getting them out, I chopped them into small chunks and put it all in the microwave to melt. The first layers, I melted directly in the vase but subsequent ones I used a microwave safe bowl and just poured the wax into the vase

The first layer....

<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_f2ZjVZ3VRD0/Ste8RZ3q8XI/AAAAAAAAAPI/cUs5wocDKPw/s1600-h/092.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; My house is often in disarray and always has been. (I'm striving to clean, purge, and re-organize. Really, I am!) But for once...I'm proud to say that I have a cleaning tip! And one that I came up with!

<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_f2ZjVZ3VRD0/SsUSN0XbsBI/AAAAAAAAANw/rVREYnHAeNw/s1600-h/DSCI0083.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; Sorry...I couldn't resist posting an image of my finished product. It's not what I wanted it to look like...but I'm proud nonetheless.

If you've ever done cake decorating you've used piping bags and various tips and possibly couplers. The tips are kind of a pain to clean and the piping bags can be a pain to dry. Herein lies my tip...

Many moms -- whether breast or formula feeding -- use bottles and have a bottle brush like this...

I found in cleaning my decorating tips that the "nipple cleaning" end of the bottle brush works GREAT for getting the frosting out of the tip. Like this..

If you have one of those dishwasher baskets for nipples that would work well too...I just don't happen to have one.

Now I started drying my pastry bags like this back when I was taking my cake decorating class. It works great and I figured I'd share... What you use depends on the size of the bag. This time I took an empty 2 liter pop bottle and an empty pop can and opened up my cleaned bags on top of them like this...

<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_f2ZjVZ3VRD0/SsUUnYZMGcI/AAAAAAAAAOI/1H2uhjx5SvI/s1600-h/DSCI0092.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; They all work great and the bags dry really well.

Our Adventure to Powell's

Powell's City of Books is my absolute favorite place in Portland. I'd been having a hard time tracking down a copy of our next book club book -- Girl of the Limberlost -- so I got to make a trip downtown to visit Powell's. Plus, I've been really excited to take Simon with me. So what better day than Thursday (or "Mommy Day" as I like to call it) to do it? And of course I had to document this monumental occasion!

Simon was so anxious to leave...
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_f2ZjVZ3VRD0/SrvtOaRTefI/AAAAAAAAAMo/9jn0fp0nPRo/s320/DSCI0058.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5385158611277412850" />
And he was the hit of the trainride down! He just kept making this low "uuuuhhhh" noise. I think he liked how the vibrations make his voice sound. He does it in the car too.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_f2ZjVZ3VRD0/SrvtfMYrqlI/AAAAAAAAAMw/GLX5-y1KQvc/s320/DSCI0063.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5385158899608037970" />
Once we arrived we made our way to the children's section.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_f2ZjVZ3VRD0/Srvt0ybDW9I/AAAAAAAAAM4/lRJLZkEm1xE/s320/DSCI0064.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5385159270595779538" />
Might I say that Powell's is kind of a pain to navigate with a stroller. There's just so many stairs that the only way you can get around is to take the elevator and the elevators are so slow there! But it's really a moot point because, let's face it, YOU'RE AT POWELL'S!!!!
By the time we left, Simon was pretty tired out...
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_f2ZjVZ3VRD0/SrvvHTPAATI/AAAAAAAAANA/djIcKKPVbnQ/s320/DSCI0067.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5385160688152871218" />
Overall it was a successful trip! I stayed within my budget and got a a few books for Simon, a few books for me, and found a new author for Tony. Here's the haul:
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_f2ZjVZ3VRD0/SrvvogddxQI/AAAAAAAAANI/8yRSt0Rv1Mc/s320/DSCI0070.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5385161258638886146" />
And I finally got one of these too...
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_f2ZjVZ3VRD0/Srvv-LI62gI/AAAAAAAAANQ/4qxvaBpTq-4/s320/7228_138082058809_509148809_2485761_7355376_n.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5385161630872689154" />

My Favorite Photography Subject...

I took a few photography classes back in college and found that I thoroughly enjoyed it. Post #2 is yet another cake but I'd been dying to try this one out ever since I first saw a picture in my stumblings across the web. I give you: Spaghetti and Meatballs...Cake Style!

I started by baking a 9 inch round cake in two layers. Chocolate, of course!
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_f2ZjVZ3VRD0/SqlOEGx1noI/AAAAAAAAAJ4/m6n9JhRYRQI/s320/DSCI0154.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5379917062316859010" />
Just fill and stack. I put the cake on a big, rounded dinner plate and kind of carved a little divot into the top so the meatballs could nestle in a little.

Next, I applied a thin layer of frosting. No need to worry about it being "crumb free" since you'll be covering it with a bunch of piped noodles.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_f2ZjVZ3VRD0/SqlUQo5mqVI/AAAAAAAAAK4/0RsNVzZfQds/s320/DSCI0155.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5379923874704435538" />

Using a pastry bag and #5 tip -- it's a round, writing tip -- I piped tons and tons of "noodles" across the cake. I built up the edges and sides more than the middle.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_f2ZjVZ3VRD0/SqlQzTxQ1xI/AAAAAAAAAKQ/Az8wJfITCWg/s320/DSCI0159.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5379920072281216786" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_f2ZjVZ3VRD0/SqlQywWmHjI/AAAAAAAAAKI/-4I9HUMWZVo/s320/DSCI0157.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5379920062774124082" />

I made my meatballs out of fondant. I had some leftover from a previous cake so I turned it brown using Wilton coloring -- a lot of brown and a little black. After they were a satisfactory color I rolled them into little lumpy balls. Then arrange them on top of the cake. (Sorry the 1st image is so bright!)
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_f2ZjVZ3VRD0/SqlSGPRj4EI/AAAAAAAAAKg/csY7LOpeRno/s320/DSCI0163.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5379921497003647042" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_f2ZjVZ3VRD0/SqlSF3ER-wI/AAAAAAAAAKY/qIay578Bi2g/s320/DSCI0162.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5379921490505497346" />
The original directions said to use truffles for the meatballs. I didn't have any chocolate so I just used fondant.

Now for the sauce... I combined some strawberry jelly with a bit of blackberry jelly and heated it up in the microwave for about a minute so it would pour/spread easily. I then spooned it on top of and between the meatballs. You mostly just want to cover the middle of the cake. so that the finished product looks like this...
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_f2ZjVZ3VRD0/SqlTskG4vdI/AAAAAAAAAKw/9m7fKXttxO8/s320/DSCI0167.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5379923254942678482" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_f2ZjVZ3VRD0/SqlTsNT0UfI/AAAAAAAAAKo/Fy4RX8YfTPk/s320/DSCI0166.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5379923248822899186" />

I took it to a family dinner on Labor Day... I didn't have just any cake in mind... I wanted a fiesta inspired cake. Thus the "Burrito Cake" was born.
I attempted to make it a jelly roll cake to begin with but my practice cake was a huge fail! (It split in about 8 different places when I tried to unroll it in order to add the filling.) So I used a cookie sheet as my cake pan, split it into thirds, then stacked and carved it to give a rounded look to the cake. Instead of just using plain old frosting I covered the cake in fondant. (I tinted the fondant using a little yellow and brown Wilton cake decorating coloring. Tortillas aren't stark white!) After covering the cake I made a crescent of sort and attached it as the "seam" of the burrito.
The final touches are "salsa" -- strawberry jelly -- and "sour cream" -- extra frosting. If you attempt to make this, it's a good idea to garnish your burrito right before serving it... The jelly and frosting didn't want to stay on top during transport.
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_f2ZjVZ3VRD0/SqA07TgI17I/AAAAAAAAAJg/2mi6YXzAL8o/s320/DSCI0133.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5377356148532369330" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_f2ZjVZ3VRD0/SqA001mgZYI/AAAAAAAAAJY/xiASPLsp63w/s320/DSCI0132.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5377356037426800002" />
